Trauma Therapy

Healing takes time—and you’re not alone. Our goal is to support you with empathy, clarity, and tools that empower your growth and deepen your sense of connection.

What is Trauma?

Trauma is not just about what happened — it’s about how your mind and body experienced what happened.
It occurs when something feels too overwhelming, too sudden, or too prolonged for our nervous system to process or integrate.

When we experience trauma, our body shifts into survival mode — activating instinctive protective responses like fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. These responses help us survive in the moment, but when they stay “switched on,” we can remain stuck in patterns of anxiety, numbness, hypervigilance, or disconnection long after the event has passed.

Trauma is not a sign of weakness — it’s the body’s intelligent attempt to protect us from danger or pain.

This therapy is not just about resolving conflict — it’s about creating secure functioning relationships where both partners feel safe, connected, and cared for.

Big “T” and Little “t” Trauma

Not all trauma looks the same.
Many people associate trauma only with major, life-threatening events — but trauma can also arise from smaller, chronic experiences that slowly erode our sense of safety and self-worth.

  • Big “T” Trauma refers to events that are clearly overwhelming or life-altering, such as accidents, assaults, abuse, war, or natural disasters. These experiences can leave lasting emotional, psychological, and physical effects.
  • Little “t” trauma involves experiences that may seem “smaller” but still have a significant impact on our nervous system and emotional well-being. Examples include ongoing criticism, emotional neglect, bullying, relationship loss, chronic stress, medical trauma, or feeling unseen and unheard over time.

Both big and little traumas can affect how we think, feel, and relate to others. They can lead to symptoms such as anxiety, depression, difficulty trusting, emotional reactivity, or a sense of being disconnected from oneself or others.

At Curated Counselling, we understand that trauma is deeply personal — what overwhelms one person may not affect another in the same way. Our role is to meet you where you are, without judgment, and help your nervous system find safety and balance again.

How We Work With Trauma

Healing trauma involves more than talking about what happened. Because trauma lives in the body as much as in the mind, recovery means helping the nervous system recognize that it’s safe again.

Trauma-Informed Therapy & Care

What It Is

Trauma-informed therapy is an approach that understands how past experiences—whether single events or prolonged stress—can shape the way we think, feel, and relate to others. It recognizes that trauma lives not only in our memories but also in our nervous system and body.

At its core, trauma-informed care is about creating a safe, collaborative, and empowering environment where healing can unfold at your own pace. It means we approach each session with curiosity rather than judgment, asking “What happened to you?” instead of “What’s wrong with you?”

At Curated Counselling, being trauma-informed means being attuned to your body’s cues, understanding how your nervous system protects you, and using that awareness to guide every step of therapy.

Why It Works

Traditional therapy often focuses on thoughts alone—but trauma can disrupt the body’s sense of safety, leaving the nervous system in patterns of fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown. Lasting healing happens when both the mind and body are engaged.

A trauma-informed approach helps calm the body’s protective responses while gently making sense of past experiences. Through grounding, somatic awareness, and emotional regulation, clients begin to reconnect with their inner safety, build trust in themselves, and develop new pathways for resilience.

This approach works because it honours the pace and capacity of the nervous system, ensuring that healing doesn’t feel overwhelming or re-traumatizing. Over time, clients experience more ease, balance, and connection—to themselves and to others.
